Julyana Free Zone has made remarkable progress in recent months in attracting commercial ships and achieving record numbers in unloading and transport operations, making the port a major destination for traders and reliable for shipping agents, Julyana Free Port Authority’s Director of the Handling and Storage Office, Sherif Aoun, said last Saturday (1 February).
Aoun said the Free Port showed an outstanding performance in January 2025, with a total of 43 ships docking at the port’s quays. He said this reflects the growing demand for its services and its ability to meet the needs of the market quickly and effectively.
The types of ships loaded with goods were:
- 24 container ships docked at the port, which the free zone says indicates the large volume of trade handled through the port.
- 5 ships loaded with heavy equipment and machinery docked – reflecting the port’s capacity to accommodate these types of cargo.
- 8 bulk cement ships docked – reflecting the important role of the port in importing basic materials for construction.
- 2 grain (barley) ships docked – reflecting the diversity of port imports that meet the needs of the local market.
- 2 general cargo ships docked loaded with general cargo
- 1 ship loaded with asphalt
- 1 ship loaded with new and used cars coming from the European market
It will be recalled that the development of Julyana Free Zone Port is part of Libya’s wider aim to develop transit trade through ships but also overland to Chad and Sudan. This would be in parallel to transit trade through Misrata Free Zone in western Libya by ship and overland to Niger.
