The U.S. Department of Commerce is supporting a solution to Libya’s flared gas dilemma.
The revelation was made by Debbie Hirst, President of AmCham Libya during her presentation at the Libya Energy & Economic Summit held at the Rixos Centre on 13-14 January 2024.
Speaking exclusively to Libya Herald, Hirst explained that the purpose of the presentation was to support U.S. company Procegas and its compressed natural gas (CNG) solution for flared gas in Libya.
An ideal solution for Libya’s flared gas needs
Because Procegas is a U.S. company, she added, it was able to qualify for support from the U.S. Department of Commerce. In its support letters, the Department of Commerce indicated that this was an ideal solution for Libya’s needs.
This is the case where there is significant flared gas over a large geographical area, however not in volumes sufficient to justify the construction of a new comprehensive gas pipeline network. AmCham is supporting Procegas by channelling resources available from the U.S. Government.
Libya seeks to reduce its flared gas
Libya flares a significant amount of associated natural gas as a result of oil production, which is extremely harmful to the environment. Similar to other oil producing countries, Libya is under pressure to reduce the amount of its flared gas.
Procegas technically and cost-effective solution
Procegas, Hirst explained, offers a solution that is technically and cost effective which involves compressing and transporting the gas and then injecting it into the nearest gas pipeline system.
Regarding the Summit, Debbie Hirst said, “This is the second edition of the event, the first of which occurred in 2021. AmCham supported the event in 2021 and continued to support it in 2023 because we consider it to be the premier international conference held in Libya. The event brought together senior management from a number of international energy companies, as well as senior Libyan government officials from organizations such as the Prime Minister’s office, NOC and the Ministry of Oil and Gas.”
