At least 24 out of the 45 participating Libyan manufacturing companies signed supply contracts in Nouakchott, Mauritania at the Libyan Products Exhibition, the Libyan Export Promotion Centre (LEPC) report.
The event was held from 23 to 26 October under the auspices of the Ministry of Economy and Trade and organised by its LEPC and sponsored by the Libyan General Board of Fairs.
At the end of the event, the participating Libyan companies issued a statement calling for:
- The activation of the existing Maghreb Union agreement that enables goods manufactured within Maghreb states to enter fellow Maghreb states without having to pay taxes or customs duties.
- The commencement of direct flights and shipping services between Libya and Mauritania.
- The establishment of a Libyan Mauritanian Joint Chamber of Commerce.
The event follows on from the successful ‘‘Made in Libya 1’’ event held in Tunis in November 2022 and the ‘‘Made in Libya 2’’ event held in Niamey, Niger in March 2023.
Diversify the Libyan economy
The events are part of the Libyan government’s wider efforts to diversify its economy away from hydrocarbons, create new jobs for the unemployed youth, and university graduates (and militias), decrease the size of the public sector, decentralise, and increase exports and transit trade.
Exporting to the promising markets in sub-Saharan Africa by holding export promotion events, is part of this wider effort.
