The UNDP and Libya’s Ministry of Planning and Ministry of Local Government launched the Local Peacebuilding and Resilience in southern Libya on Wednesday.
The three entities are partnering with local authorities, civil society, and the private sector to create inclusive and sustainable peace at the community level.
The programme aims to improve trust between citizens and local institutions and enhance basic services and livelihood opportunities for people in the south of Libya, the UNDP reports.
During the launch, UNDP’s Resident Representative in Libya, Marc-Andre Franche said
‘‘Last year’s Human Development Report launch highlighted the devastating impact of the past decade on Libya’s investment and progress, equating to a loss of 20 years. Today, we are together with the Ministry of Planning and Ministry of Local Government to support the people of the south’’.
‘‘The UNDP is working to establish sustainable peace and boost the local economy in the South of Libya by supporting the (Libyan) government in providing essential services and generating employment opportunities for the youth and women.
“Creating peace in Libya starts with building it from the ground up, particularly in the south. Our programme focuses on improving livelihoods, and creating jobs and businesses, for the next three years, in nine municipalities with the most significant impact locally.” Franche stressed.
