During Monday’s regular update to the Security Council on Libya, UNSMIL head and Special Representative to the Secretary General Abdoulaye Bathily launched a High-level Steering Panel for Libya to guide it to elections in 2023.
On the back of this, the U.S., through its Embassy in Libya, urged key Libyan leaders to approach the UN election plan in a constructive spirit.
It said Bathily’s proposal for an elections-enabling mechanism is galvanising the Libyan body politic and will build on progress made between the House of Representatives and High State Council on the legal basis for elections.
Now is an opportunity for them to show that they are truly dedicated to serving the needs of the Libyan people.
