‘‘Some (Libyan) institutional players are actively hindering progress towards elections’’: UNSMIL head Bathily

Abdoulaye Bathily, Special Representative to the Secretary General (SRSG) and head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), announced at a press conference at the UN in New York on Monday that he had tendered his resignation to the UN Secretary General.

The decision has to be confirmed by Secretary General António Guterres.

The resignation announcement came immediately after yet another pessimistic report on the situation in Libya by Bathily to the UN Security Council. Bathily held no realistic prospects for elections in the near future.

Bathily was appointed in September 2022.
