The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) condemned yesterday what it referred to as ‘‘the violent killing that occurred in the Abu Salim area of Tripoli on the night of February 17, claiming the lives of at least 10 people. The mission continues to closely monitor the situation.
This incident is another reminder of the repeated warnings made by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Abdoulaye Bathily, that competition between security actors poses serious risks to the fragile security situation in the capital, Tripoli.
The mission urges the relevant Libyan authorities to ensure an independent, rapid and comprehensive investigation into the incident, and to work to prevent any actions that may lead to escalation and further violence.’’
