London, 25 March 2021:

Speaking at yesterday’s first Libyan Government of National Unity (GNU) press conference, its Spokesperson Mohamed Hamuda confirmed that the GNU had held its first full cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

A doubling of efforts needed

Hamuda reported that GNU prime minister, Abd Alhamid Aldabaiba, had stressed during the meeting the difficulty of the stage Libya was going through, which requires the doubling of efforts in light of the shortness of the GNU’s term of office (planned to end on 24 December) and the high hopes held by Libyans for the GNU.

One of the most important challenges of the phase is the Corona pandemic and the provision of services, mainly electricity, he explained.

Unified government handover

The Spokesperson highlighted the end of the handover between the outgoing Tripoli and eastern governments and the incoming Unity Government and said only financial procedures remain outstanding between the relevant committees.

He said the two Deputy Prime Ministers will be present at the regional Prime Minister’s Office in the southern and eastern regions.

At the meeting, the Prime Minister stressed to his Ministers to reach out to the citizens and takr personal charge for all challenges.

5+5 JMC, reopening west-east coastal road

He reported that the Prime Minister saw the unification of the military establishment as a fundamental requirement, and the results of the work of the 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC) are good and are moving towards this goal at a steady pace.

Departure of foreign forces and mercenaries

The Spokesperson reported that the government was waiting for the reopening of the west-east coastal road, and the departure of all mercenaries from Libya, one of the conditions for possession of full sovereignty.

Influencing the narrative, confronting fake news

He confirmed that soon the official government social media pages will be endorsed (blue tick logo) to confront the existing fake pages, and a regular press briefing will be held to clarify all the facts and refute misleading rumours.
