The Tripoli-based Ministry of Interior (MoI) has reported that the suspected explosive device found at Tripoli’s Post Office headquarters in Zawia Street on Friday was a false alarm.
The MoI urged all media and foreign embassies not to rely on unofficial media and sources of news in assessing the security information on Libya. It urged that they wait for official reports from authorized and competent MoI departments.
The MoI’s reference to foreign embassies came on the back of reports that the US had issued a security alert forecasting a security infringement in Tripoli.
Reporting on the incident, the MoI said that it had received a report from its security personnel at the Post Office HQ of a suspicious looking package. In response, it dispatched its explosives experts to the location, raised the security level and secured a number of vital locations in the city.
The MoI said its initial investigations showed that there were no explosive materials within the package and that after further investigations it will issue a complete report on the incident.
It assured citizens and foreign residents that it acts in all seriousness and determination to such security incidents and that it will take all necessary security procedures that ensure the safety and protection of private and public facilities.
