Emhemed Shouaib has resigned as resigned as the House of Representatives’ first deputy president.
In a letter to HoR president Ageela Saleh and HoR members, he said that he had expressed his intention to resign “many times” but that colleagues whom he respected had dissuaded him. This time, though, “private reasons” had convinced him to give up the post. He added that he wanted to express his respect and appreciation to all who had supported him.
“My deep apologies for any inconveniences and I wish you all luck, and to our country success and peace,” he added.
The resignation follows debate in the HoR last Tuesday about Shouaib’s continued absence over the past two years. Members voted to authorise Saleh to set up a committee aimed at amending HoR regulations so that the first deputy president could be removed.
Shouaib, who is now living in the UAE, is not resigning as a member of the HoR.
