Tunis, 24 October 2017:
UN special envoy Ghassan Salamé arrived in Tripoli today for a series of key meetings the main objective of which was to ensure that the Tunis talks on amending the Libyan Political Agreement get back on track as soon as possible.
They stopped last week because of divisions between the dialogue teams from the House or Representatives and the State Council. To that end, there were talks today with State Council president Abdulrahman Sewehli, himself under growing public pressure in the capital to compromise, and with HoR members currently staying in the city.
For the sake of diplomatic protocol there was also a meeting with the Presidency Council’s foreign minister Mohamed Siala, who was briefed by Salamé on the current state of the dialogue.
Separately, Salamé met with planning minister Taher Al-Juhaimi to assess the economic situation as well as increased coordination with the international community.
Salamé is due to meet other HoR members tomorrow.
