Benghazi, 31 August 2017:
Another bound body has been discovered in Benghazi, bringing to at least six the number of such victims in the city in the last ten days. Five corpses were reported dumped in a small park in the city last week.
All the dead had their hands tied behind their backs, had been beaten and reportedly showed signs of torture.
The latest victim has been named as Abdulrahman Al-Maadani. According to a relative he was seized from his home in Leithi by a masked group. Married with a young child, he was a metal worker making doos and windows.
It is not clear why he was killed. The relative insisted he had never been involved in the army or in security but there are suggestions that this is a revenge killing and that he may have had links with the militants when they controlled Leithi. Many lived there.
Just over a year ago 14 victims of a mass execution were found thrown on a rubbish dump in Leithi near the city’s social security headquarters.
Four months later ten murdered men were discovered together in a group. With both crimes all the victims were handcuffed and most showed signs of beating.
The Security Directorate said after each discovery that it was mounting an investigation and would bring the killers to justice. No arrests nor subsequent trials have been reported.
