Tunis, 22 July 2017:
Sabratha’s mayor has postponed for a week the conference and two-day workshop on the running of municipalities and the challenges facing them. It was due to start tomorrow. No reason has been given but it is thought that there has been insufficient take-up by other municipal councils, mainly because of the security situation.
Mayor Hussein Dhawadi, announced the conference entitled “Uniting the visions and goals for Libya” last week and had invited 60 municipalities from across the country.
As well as looking at national reconciliation, there were to be sessions on the duties of municipalities and how to develop local revenue. It is reported that another objective was to press the Presidency Council into widening the remit of municipal councils and giving the more local powers.
