A GECOL engineer has died of his injuries after he triggered an explosion yesterday when working on the damaged electricity network in Suq Al-Hout.
The man, named locally as Khalid Al-Khafee, was taken to Benghazi Medical Centre where surgeons removed his leg. However, today he died of his wounds.
In the last ten days 20 civilians have been killed or injured in explosions in Suq Al-Hout and Sabri, the last two areas of Benghazi in which the militants held out until finally defeated last week.
The dead GECOL repairman was working in Shuwaykat Street in an area which, it is understood, had not been fully cleared by Libyan National Army (LNA) engineers.
The de-mining teams have complained of lacking the equipment and personnel to tackle the considerable task of checking for explosives. Even on the Garayunis campus of Benghazi university, from which the militants were cleared last year, the dean is warning that there are still boobytraps and unexploded ordinance.
Though, thanks to regular and extended power cuts, the population at large may not have many good words to say about GECOL management, throughout Libya GECOL engineers have earnt considerable respect for their readiness to work, sometimes under fire, to repair cables, pylons and substations more often than not damaged by fighting.
GECOL worker Khalid Khafee has paid for his dedication with his life.
