Tobruk and Tunis, 25 March 2017:
While Benghazi celebrated World Earth Hour by turning off all unnecessary lights and electronic devices for sixty minutes last night, the people of Tobruk were enduring the start of an 18-hour a town-wide blackout .
It is still unclear what caused the failure of the 130MW Tobruk power station but in recent weeks there has been a series of cuts that have last up to four hours.
State electricity company GECOL, which is often quick to acknowledge problems on its network, gave out no information today as to the cause of the problem.
In the past the Tobruk power station has suffered from technical and labour problems.
Last night the townspeople of Tobruk backed World Earth Hour, whether they wanted to or not. In Benghazi the occasion was promoted by students at the Arab Medical University who used candles and the flashlights on their mobile phones to demonstrate their support.
