Tripoli, 13 March 2017:
The Presidency Council’s local government minister, Bidad Gansu, held talks in Tripoli today with the head of the EU mission to Libya, Bettina Muscheidt, about EU help for municipalities in building local skill capacities.
Talks also covered the re-opening of embassies and consulates of EU states in Libya and were attended by officials from the foreign ministry.
Accompanying Muscheidt was the head of the EU Border Assistance Mission in Libya (EUBAM), Vincenzo Taliavera.
With most of Libya’s towns stable and orderly despite the national crisis, the EU has in recent months been looking to collaborate with municipalities in a number of areas. In January, an agreement to improve educational opportunities and social inclusion for young people was signed in Tunis by representatives from the Ministry of Local Government, UNICEF and the EU. The point of the agreement is that it will be enacted at local municipal level, not by the central government.
