Tripoli, 7 February 2017:
Work has begun on a new locally-funded medical centre in Sebha as local politicians press for government money to buy even basic hospital supplies, of which there is a serious shortage.
A sign of the financial crisis is that the new LD 600,000 centre is being largely funded by charitable donations and is being built in part by volunteers. When finished, the three-storey complex will include neonatal care and surgeries though serious cases will still be dealt with in the town’s main hospital.
Meanwhile southern members of the House of Representatives have been in Tripoli to protest what they say is an acute shortage of medical supplies in their region. The logistics that once delivered to Fezzan the medicines and consumables hospitals and clinics needed, are no longer working, the politicians said. They urged health ministry officials to find a dependable way of sending supplies.
The group then moved on the ministry of finance where they complained about inadequate central government funding to keep their hospitals equipped, staffed and maintained.
