Benghazi, 25 February 2017:
A senior Libyan National Army officer has been seized by gunmen south of Derna.
Colonel Idris Al-Jali, the commander of the 102 Infantry Brigade was abducted this evening by seven gunmen who blocked in his vehicle at Ras Al-Teen on the road from the airbase at Maturba, which is 27 kilometres south of Derna.
Jali was travelling with two relatives who were both released. No further details of his kidnapping have been released.
The 102 Brigade has been involved in anti-terrorist operations around Derna. Last April the unit disputed control of Fataieh with the Derna Revolutionaries’ Shoura Council, which had earlier driven IS out of Derna itself. Both sides claimed to have ousted the terrorists from their last major position above the town and claimed to be in control.
