Tripoli, 19 December 2016:
Since Faiez Serraj’s formal announcement that the battle for Sirte was over, the international community has been sending its congratulations. Yesterday it was UNSMIL and the United States. Today the victory was welcomed by the European Union.
However, having paid tribute to the Bunyan Marsous forces who died or were injured in the seven month-long fight to defeat IS terrorists in the town, the EU statement went on to condemn the use of force elsewhere and those who called for it.
“We expect all parties to refrain from violence and from the use of military means aimed at forcing a unilateral solution to Libya’s political crisis”.
It continued: “Recent waves of violence, like the one in Tripoli recently, as well as irresponsible statements calling for armed confrontation, will risk endangering the process of building a stable, secure and prosperous Libya for its citizens”.
