By Libya Herald staff.

Tunis, 23 April 2016:

Thursday’s declaration of support for the Government of National Accord by 102 members of the . . .[restrict]House of Representatives has been welcomed by ambassadors from the US and a number of the EU states.

“We commend the courageous efforts of the clear majority of House of Representatives (HoR) MPs who, in spite of unacceptable threats to prevent the HoR from living up to its historic responsibility to the Libyan people, expressed their endorsement of the Government of National Accord (GNA) in their statement last night (21 April, 2016),” the joint statement read.

It was issued yesterday evening by the ambassadors and special envoys of France, the EU, Germany, Portugal, Italy, Spain, UK and US.

Saying that they welcomed the HoR members’ “granting of confidence to the GNA”, the envoys added that they “deeply respect and value the role of HoR as the legislative body of the LPA and the guardian of Libya’s democracy”.

The statement continued: “We welcome the decision to convene the HoR in a Libyan location that offers security and safety for its members.

“We call on the GNA’s Presidency Council and Cabinet to assume their responsibilities through a quick and peaceful transfer of power, and encourage them to take further immediate steps to meet the needs of the Libyan people.”

The envoys noted that like their countries, the GNA was supported by the African Union, the League of Arab States, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the Group of Neighbouring States.
