The rough seas of the last 48 hours appear to have claimed the lives of . . .[restrict]another 84 migrants.
The International Organisation for Migration is reporting that those who drowned yesterday were in a sinking inflatable raft around seven kilometres off the coast from Sabratha.
The Italian coastguard is reported to have received a satellite phone call from the stricken craft and diverted an unnamed Italian cargo ship to the scene. The vessel rescued 26 migrants but it was feared that many more had drowned.
When the survivors were landed In Lampedusa, the IOM learnt that there had been at least 100 people aboard the raft when it set off from Libya. [/restrict]
