Despite supposedly being sacked last month by the Thinni government as Libyan ambassador to the . . .[restrict]United Nations, Ibrahim Dabbashi has taken on an additional role at the UN as one of the four vice-presidents of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) executive board for 2016.
In his new role, Dabbashi took part in the First Regular Session of the year which opened today in New York. The three-day meeting covers oversight and funding of UNICEF’s extensive programmes worldwide.
Along with the president, the four vice-presidents constitute UNICEF’s bureau. They are elected annually by the executive board’s 36 members from the five regional groups of UN member states. Dabbashi this year represents the African group.
In his speech today, he spoke of the need to strengthen the rights of children in Africa as well as the work by UNICEF in the fight against AIDS and Ebola on the continent. He spoke too of the important role of UNICEF in Libya. [/restrict]
