Tunis, 2 October 2015:
Tunis Air is to resume flights to Tripoli on 25 October, a Tunis Air official has . . .[restrict]told the Libya Herald. The Tunisian carrier will fly daily to Tripoli-Mitiga airport.
It will also be serving Labraq and Tobruk airports. However, the airline did not give details of the planned schedule for the three Libyan destinations.
Tunisia reopened its airspace to Libyan carriers in at the start of August but the national airline had hesitated to resume its own services, it is thought because of insurance difficulties.
When it agreed to allow in Libyan airlines, the Tunisian government said that the resumption of services by Tunisian carriers would depend on the security at Libyan airports. Tripoli’s Mitiga airport has in the past been attacked by government warplanes, albeit without any significant damage.
The return of Tunis Air comes after Tunisia opened airspace to Libyan airlines last month, enabling them to fly to Tunisian airports.
Tunisia closed had its airspace to Libyan carrier in the summer of 2014. In June this year, it denied reports that it was opening an office at Mitiga.
Early last month, the Libya Herald revealed that Tunisia was insisting that Libyans transiting through Tunis should buy a return ticket via Tunis. [/restrict]
