Tripoli, 28 September 2015:
US president Barack Obama has admitted that NATO got it wrong after its intervention in . . .[restrict]Libya.
Speaking of the lessons to be learnt in reference to action in Syria, Obama said that the US had joined the UN-mandated international coalition to prevent a slaughter.
“Even as we helped the Libyan people bring an end to the reign of a tyrant, our coalition could have and should have done more to fill a vacuum left behind”.
He indicated that such a lack of support would not occur again with a National Unity government, but then he appeared to broaden that support. “ We will help any legitimate government as it works to bring the country together” he said.
Given that there remain strong doubts that a new unity government will emerge from the UNSMIL dialogue, Obama may have been suggesting that Washington’s default position would then be to support the internationally-recognised House of Representatives and government in Tobruk and Beida. [/restrict]
