Benghazi, 29 August 2015:
The malfunctioning online application system for the new Libyan biometric passports will be fixed “within days” . . .[restrict]according to an official from the Passport Office.
Hani Belras Ali told the Libya Herald that the countrywide system has been in crisis because it had been allocating too many advance appointments for applicants on the same day and failed to give specific times. This has led to long and angry queues and a steady backlog of stalled applications.
The mood of frustrated applicants has reportedly not been improved by certain people being ushered into passport offices immediately they arrived. The new passport costs LD50.5, only a fraction more than the old travel document. However queue jumpers are reportedly paying up to LD5,000 for the privilege.
Ali explained that it was expected that using national ID numbers would also expedite the process. [/restrict]
