Tripoli, 29 June 2015:
Libya’s chaos has seen volunteers doing everything from cleaning up Tripoli’s Medina to boy scouts sweeping . . .[restrict]up the detritus of conflict in Derna. But the move by volunteers to rebuild a road bridge is surely a first.
Bridge 27 on the road between Zawia and Tripoli was seriously damaged in fighting last month. A large chunk of the structure was blown out leaving exposed rebar and the bridge clearly in danger of collapse.
Enter local volunteers advised by a civil engineer. Using just a forklift truck and scaffolding apparently taken from an abandoned building project, they have shored up Bridge 27 to prevent it falling down. It is reported that the bridge is now safe to use, though more permanent repairs are clearly necessary. [/restrict]
