Benghazi, 8 June 2015:
Creeping sand on the road to Tobruk south of Ajdabiya has been causing an alarming toll . . .[restrict]of crashes, so locals have taken it into their own hands the clear the drifts away.
Since the start of this year there have been no less than 223 smashes on the highway, many with deaths and injuries. The main casualties have been goods and fuel trucks.
The sand has accumulated over the last 12 months as the deteriorating security stopped the scheduled highway maintenance and clearance. This week local contractors lent diggers and crews to help local youths bulldoze and shovel the sand away along some 100 kilometres of the road. The project has been overseen by local elder Haj Taher Askened Fakhiri.
