Tripoli, 27 December 2014:
A fire at the Saudi embassy in central Tripoli has damaged three vehicles but was . . .[restrict]brought under control by firemen called to the premises last night. According to the Tripoli-based office of the Libyan news agency LANA, the fire was caused by a short circuit following heavy rain in the capital.
LANA quoted the head of the diplomatic police, Colonel Mabrouk Butaher, saying that members of the force outside the embassy had noticed smoke and raised the alarm.
The embassy has been empty for some time. Saudi Arabian diplomats left Libya in the summer and are currently operating out of Tunis. According to LANA, Butaher was in contact with the Saudi Ambassador informing him of the damage.
There were claims on social media that the embassy was set on fire. However, there is no evidence to support the allegation. [/restrict]
