Tripoli, 25 August 2014:
As stories of looting and burning of property in Tripoli increase and Libya continues to . . .[restrict]plunge into chaos, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird released a statement yesterday condemning the ongoing violence.
“Canada deplores in the strongest terms the ongoing violence and destruction in Libya and is appalled by the reported incidents of human rights abuses. We urge all parties to accept an immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities,” the statement read.
Canada remains committed to standing with Libya in its efforts to build a democratic society, choosing to work with elected institutions and those who acknowledge and support them. The statement added that the people of Libya had “recently elected the House of Representatives as their sole and legitimate representative.”
Furthermore, the statement called for the restoration of the rule of law, accountability for those responsible for violating international law, and the end of terrorism and violence in Libya. [/restrict]
