Benghazi, 15 July 2015:
Mahmoud Obeidi, the son of General Suleiman Obeidi who was kidnapped five days ago in . . .[restrict]Bengahzi, has been released.
A friend of the family told the Libya Herald that he was released yesterday afternoon at about 4pm and that his family was overjoyed to see him. According to the friend he was in relatively good health but there were marks on his body suggesting that he had been beaten.
There an attempt to kill Mahmoud Obeidi late last month and given that his brother Haithem was kidnapped in November and has not been seen since, the worst was feared for him.
There are now allegations that he was released in a deal with his kidnappers. This has been fuelled by the fact that his father was on the Qatari-based TV channel Libya Ahrar in the evening condemning General Khalifa’s Operation Dignity. He accused it indiscriminate attacks on civilians. The family and those close to them are keeping tight-lipped about how Mahmoud was released or who seized him.
