Tripoli, 12 May 2014:
A Libyan diplomat was kidnapped in the Karsa district of Derna yesterday, according to local . . .[restrict]officials. The victim, named as Abdussalam Ben Saoud, works as an accountant at the Libyan embassy in Yemen.
“The man was kidnapped two days ago in the Karssa district in western Derna, and we still haven’t received any news of his location or even of possible kidnappers,” an official from Derna told the Libya Herald.
The diplomat was on holiday visiting friends and family.
“We have heard unofficially that the kidnappers are seeking an LD 10-million ransom to set him free,” added the official.
There have been other kidnappings for ransom in Derna but the bulk of its problems is connected to power being exerted by extremists. At a result, there is now a total absence of police, the army and other forms of state authority. That has allowed criminals to flourish. [/restrict]
