Tripoli, 29 May 2014:
A bomb explosion has damaged the Sidi Said tomb in the oasis town of Awjila.
“The explosion . . .[restrict]happened yesterday, just before dawn,” Awjila resident Murad Al-Awjili told the Libya Herald.
“It is difficult to say whether or not extremists were behind the blast because the town is quite small. Everyone in Awjila knows one another, and when outsiders come in, everyone takes note. No one was even seen visiting the shrine in recent days,” Awjili explained.
The bombing of shrines has become very common since the 2011 revolution as Islamists have sought to gain control in eastern Libya. Salafists view them as idolatrous and believe that they should be banned and destroyed.
