Tripoli, 2 April 2014:
The surgery department at Benghazi’s Hawari Hospital had to close yesterday after rusty drainage . . .[restrict]pipes broke and the area began to flood.
“Drain water flooded in the hospital yesterday and we had to close the surgery department,” hospital spokesman Hani Al-Areeby told the Libya Herald. “It is now full of water. The infrastructure is very bad and needs urgent improvement” he added.
The hospital has been aware of the issue for some time. “We’ve sent letters to the Ministry of Health a couple of times [asking them] to sign contracts with maintenance services companies,” Areeby explained.
The drains are just one of many problems resulting from years of neglect. Last month, in an attempt to ensure uninterrupted supplies of water in future, the hospital started to dig wells in its own grounds. [/restrict]
