Tripoli, 2 January 2014:
Despite concerns about . . .[restrict]security in the region, the second Fezzan 4×4 race will take place later this month. The week-long race, which is open to 4×4 vehicles, quad bikes and motorbikes, will start in Sebha on 15 January, according to Mohammed Abdallah Al-Magrabi, the spokesman for the organising committee. It will end on 21 January.
The race, in four sections, will take in the Gaberoun and Umm Al-Maa oases and lakes in the Obari Sand Sea, north of the road between Sebha and Obari. The Gaberoun lake, considered to be one of the most beautiful in Libya, is 120 kilometres west of Sebha and some 35 kilometres north of the road. Like that at Umma Ak-Maa, it is accessible only by a 4×4-drive through the dunes.
The finishing line will be at Tawiwa, made famous in the early 1980s as the site for launching the scientifically successful but politically doomed OTRAG rockets. At the finishing line there will also be camel races and displays of traditional local handicrafts and art, Al-Magrabi told the Libya Herald.
Participants have to pay LD 350. This will cover the costs of their overnight accommodation and food.
The first Fezzan 4×4 race took place in February last year. [/restrict]
