Tripoli 10 December 2013:
Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in south-west Libya tomorrow and Wednesday, Libyan weather forecasters have . . .[restrict]said.
“It is likely that it will rain tonight and is expected to continue for two days,” predicted Mohamed Al Shames, Director of Forecasting Division of the National Centre for Meteorology. He told the Libya Herald that he expected that the areas to be hardest hit would be around Sebha, Obari, Ghat, Murzuk and Al-Qatrun.
Given the normally arid conditions, he said that it could be expected that there would be heavy flooding down wadis and that old buildings may be damaged by torrential downpours.
However, he down-played any idea that the damage could be catastrophic. “”The rain will not be on the scale of Tripoli’s floods, but nevertheless it is important to let everyone in the region know that the storm is coming”.
