Tripoli 2 June 2013:
Ministry guards were injured by gunfire during a protest today outside the Interior Ministry, staged by . . .[restrict]a group of policemen demanding outstanding pay. The demonstration turned ugly after ministry accountants apparently failed to explain the delay.
Gunmen among the angry group of policemen and some of their administrative colleagues, opened fire on the building, hitting a number of the guards. Bystanders fled in fear. One demonstrator reportedly threatened to fire an RPG at the ministry.
A unit of the police Rapid Intervention Force was t called in but was unable to control the increasingly riotous protest. After about an hour, a unit of the Supreme Security Committee arrived. Some of the protesting policemen were disarmed and arrested. In a statement, the ministry later said that it was investigating who was behind the protest. [/restrict]
