Tripoli, 27 May 2013:
More information has emerged on Sunday’s early morning attack on the police station in Tripoli’s Martyrs . . .[restrict]Square. The incident resulted in the death of one of the attackers, now said to be a member of the Supreme Security Committee (SSC).
A Tripoli police officer told the Libya Herald that in retaliation for the death, friends and family of the deceased attacked the small station at Martyrs’ Square early this morning. He said that two individuals were kidnapped from the station during the attack and were now being held in Mitiga base.
According to the National Security Directorate of Tripoli, both of the kidnapped men are police officers, identified only by their ranks and initials. The head of the station had made a distress call and over an hour later was informed by the Rescue Department that the men involved in today’s events were members of the Deterrence Forces, sent from Mitiga to investigate the killing.
Additionally, the report says a lieutenant from the station was taken in for questioning, adding that the case was now being run by the Deterrence Forces.
It is not yet clear, which SSC the dead man belonged to, as there exist two entities with the same name in Tripoli, both operating from Mitiga.
Personal moves are thought to be behind yesterday’s attack. [/restrict]
