Tripoli, 31 January 2013:
The head of police in Tripoli has announced that as of Saturday, any vehicle without number plates or . . .[restrict]having invalid foreign number plates would be stopped and confiscated.
Colonel Mahmoud Sharif said owners had every opportunity to register their vehicles and obtain Libyan plates and should do so or lose their vehicles. “We took a resolution to open the registration department from 8 am till 6 pm every day”, he said,
This is not the first time that the authorities have promised to clamp down on unregistered vehicles.
Eight months ago, the Interior Ministry similarly announced it would to stop and impound all vehicles travelling on Libya’s roads without licence plates.
On that occasion, no indication was give as to what resources would be devoted to enforcing the measure. No such announcement has been made this time either. [/restrict]
