The British government has appointed the present acting head of mission at its Tripoli embassy to be the new ambassador.
Michael Aron, will succeed Sir Dominic Asquith who left Libya for health reasons. Formerly British ambassador to Kuwait and then Iraq, Aron has extensive experience of the Middle East and speaks fluent Arabic. He joined the FCO in 1984 after studying Arabic and French at Leeds University.
Aron said of his appointment: “ I am delighted to be staying in Libya after three months as acting Head of Mission. Libya is at a critical period in its history and, following on from the important contribution the United Kingdom made to the Libyan Revolution, we are determined to play a major role in support of a successful transition to a democratic state governed according to the rule of law, in line with the wishes of the Libyan people.”
