The US Embassy’s Consular Section was opened on Sunday morning, 26 August 2012.
There was ceremony at the embassy to . . .[restrict]mark the occasion, at which Ambassador Chris Stevens delivered a speech welcoming cooperation with the new Libyan state and expressing his hope to further establish bilateral relations between the countries.
Abdul-Rahman Gannas, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for North and South America, made a speech during which he welcomed the opening of the US Consulate in Libya and the issuance of visas. He also thanked the United States for the help and support they provided to the Libyan people during last year’s revolution, he encouraged increased cooperation between the two countries in the fields of education, health and technical expertise.
After their speeches, both the Ambassador and the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs cut the ribbon to open the new consulate building. [/restrict]
