Kufra, 10 August:
Meat prices in Kufra have plummetted due to to an increase of imports from Sudan. This comes against a . . .[restrict]backdrop of rising food prices worldwide. Average prices have dropped to around LD 17 per kilogramme.
Traditionally the price of meat rises during Ramadan, as families buy large amounts for lavish iftar meals; however, it is thought that between 7,000 and 10,000 sheep have been brought into the area from Sudan, causing supply to outsrip demand.
Mohamed Abu Sodaina, the leader of the city’s local council, stated that supplies will not be shipped north to elsewhere in Libya until it is certain that the people of Kufra have been adequately provided for, due to the hardship that the area has experienced.
Such good value for money in the meat market will be well received in Kufra, which is one of the country’s poorest areas. [/restrict]
