Tripoli, 21 June:
The pilots of two Tunisian jets claim to have destroyed two of three vehicles that had crossed the border . . .[restrict]from Libya and fired on their aircraft when they flew low to investigate.
The incident, which AP reports took place on Wednesday, occurred at intersection of the Libyan, Tunisian and Algerian borders. The third vehicle is reported to have headed off into Algeria.
Though there has been no official comment from the Tunisian authorities, it is being widely reported in Tunisia that the vehicles were being driven by smugglers, very probably carrying weapons and ammunition looted from Qaddafi’s old arsenals.
A Tunisian military unit has reached the scene but there are no reports of casualties. It has not been possible to contact the Libyan Ministry of Defence.
