Benghazi, 23 May:

The Investigation Department of the Supreme Security Committee announced yesterday that it had arrested and detained eight Syrian and one . . .[restrict]Yemeni illegal immigrants.  A statement said the nine had entered the country illegally via the Musaid crossing on the Egyptian border and headed to Benghazi. It added that they claimed they  were escaping from the Syrian regime which had conscripted them  to fight in the war there.

A member of the investigations unit at the department blamed the Awslad Ali tribe as well as both Libyans and Egyptians in Egypt for smuggling illegal immigrants into Libya.  He also claimed that some employees working for the Libyan customs have been taking bribes and allowing them in.   The nine captured, he said, had been handed over to the illegal immigration department in Benghazi.
