Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has said that he is unable to rule out the . . .[restrict]possibility of international military intervention in Libya if ongoing diplomatic efforts for dialogue fail to bear fruit.
In a press statement released yesterday, Renzi said that Italy was in close geographical proximity to Libya and that his government would do “whatever necessary” for Italy’s security.
Renzi went on to say that the growing number of illegal migrants (some 150,000 this year) entering Italy by way of Libya posed a significant threat to the country’s security, and that his government had pledged to deal with that situation as well.
Italy was at risk and could not stand by passively as the situation in Libya continued to deteriorate, Renzi said, adding that has country takes seriously its role in the peace process in Libya in accordance with the United Nations resolutions.
He made it clear, however, that there could be no international intervention without UN approval. [/restrict]
