Tripoli, 8 September 2014:
UNSMIL chief Bernardino Leon, is reported to have said this evening said that all factions . . .[restrict]within the country agree that only by talking can they stop the violence.
Leon said “The negotiations with all sides in Libya have resulted in all of them agreeing that talks are the only solution for the current crisis in the country”.
UNSMIL along with the EU has been seeking to broker talks. The Italians and Maltese still have diplomats in Tripoli. Last week London’s special envoy Jonathan Powell joined British ambassador Michael Aron on a visit which included talks in Tobruk, Misrata and Tripoli.
Leon was speaking at a brief press conference that he held with the House of Representative’s first deputy president Mohammed Shoueib at the parliament’s headquarters in Tobruk.
He had spent the afternoon talking to legislators. In his sort statement, the UNSMIL chief also reiterated the UN’s recognition of the HOR as the country’s legitimate parliament and condemned the continuing violence in the country calling on all sides to cease firing.
