Tripoli, 17 October 2014:
Unidentified thieves have stolen solar panels along the Man-Made River (MMR) pipeline in Jalu.
According to MMR . . .[restrict]engineer Ibrahim Al-Sikran, two panels were stolen on Monday.
The solar panel stations, located every four kilometres along the pipeline, detect cracks and other damage to the pipeline and transmit reports to the MMR control room in Benghazi, Sikran explained.
The theft of the panels will not necessarily decrease the MMR water flow, but it does mean that an engineer will have to visit the station and record the readings manually until the panels have been replaced, Sikran added.
The use of solar panels is considered to be a very modern system for observing changes to the pipeline. [/restrict]
