Most schools and many other public offices in Cyrenaica’s Jebel Akhdar region have been closed following falls of freezing rain and snow. Fears of flash flooding as a cold front hit the area resulted in warnings to residents to stay clear of lower ground and wadis for their own safety.
In Tripoli, where power cuts continue to run at about eight hours a day across the city, the weather is windy and cold with some rain. More downpours are expected according to the national meteorological centre, which also warns of more cold north winds and snow falling on the higher ground.
This includes not just the east of the country but also Gharyan south of the capital.
There, as winter sets in, the continuing powers cut are increasingly seen by locals not as a natural consequence of increased electricity use and problems arising from the political crisis but as the result of deliberate action by those opposed to the Presidency Council – both revolutionaries linked to Khalifa Ghwell as well as Khalifa Hafter suuporters – to make the city suffer and so turn against it.
