For a second day in a row, a group of local activists have been demonstrating in Tripoli’s Algeria Square over the deteriorating living conditions, inflation and lack of money. They have been handing out leaflets to passers-by calling on them to start an indefinite campaign of civil disobedience, as of Sunday, including strikes.
The leaflets read: “A call for civil disobedience to be started from the morning of 27 November due to the deterioration of living conditions, shortage of cash, fall of dinar value, rising of prices and shortage of medicines”.
The Libya Herald was told by one of the activists in the square, Mohamed Al-Balili that they were trying to get ordinary people to do something about the disasterous situatiom. “I think it is time to stop being negative and sit at the café shops just chatting and complaining,” he said.
“Now it is time to do something. We are seeing everyday people suffering from a lacking of their basic human rights. There are too many parents are no longer being able to buy food for their kids,” he added.
Meanwhile, a letter supposedly from Tripoli University has been leaked to media stating that staff have decided to join the civil obedience calls and would go on strike as of Sunday. However, a university official has denied this. “ I’ve just finished a phone call with the dean of the university whom confirmed to me that tomorrow will be a normal study day and denied any knowledge about the letter which been leaked to media,” Khmais Darbi, a teacher in the University told this newapaper.
The students union and the ministry of higher education have also said that there will be no strike.
