Tripoli, 4 October 2016:

A Libyan postgraduate medical student has been released by Turkish police six days after she was arrested on suspicion that she was linked to a terrorist orgnisation.

A friend of Sanna Sarghuia from Derna this evening confirmed to the Libya Herald that the mother of three had been freed. She has been studying for a doctorate at the private Fatih university which is linked to Fethullah Gulen, the exiled leader accused of masterminding the failed July coup against the administration of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The university is currently closed and some of its professors have been detained or are under house arrest.

Sarghuia had gone to an Istanbul police station to renew her residence permit. She was then taken into custody.  There was disappointment among Libyan expatriates in Istanbul at the initial low key reaction of Libyan diplomats over her case.

The friend maintained that Sarghuia’s release had been secured after representations made by local activists and a lawyer later appointed by the city’s Libyan consulate.
