Tripoli, 17 June 2016:
The repeated targeting of civilian areas of Derna are intolerable and unacceptable, and serves only to damage attempts at national reconciliation, says Ahmed Maetig, one of the five Presedency Council deputies.
“There can be no justification for the bombing of innocent civilians in this way”, he has said on his Facebook page. “We share with our people in Derna the pain caused by these irresponsible attacks.”
He said that he would work to end the suffering in the town and unite the country, calling for the town to be patient, serene and strong.
Both the UN special envoy Martin Kobler and his deputy Ali Al-Za’tari also called for an end to the bombing this past week by the helicopters belonging to the Libyan National Army led by Khalifa Hafter following a number of civilian deaths, including those of children.
From Misrata, Maetig is the most determined opponent of Hafter in the Presidency Council.
Maetig’s wife is from Derna.
